Top 10 Things to Do In (and Around) Ukarumpa

In no particular order…

1. Hamburger Night—head on down to the Teen Centre on certain Friday nights during the school term for a tasty egg burger and chips (fries) or a taco salad and milkshake!

Sports Day
2. Any and all school functions—band/choir concerts, plays, sports tournaments, Sports Day, Carnival…some of these events even have food/snacks for sale! What a deal! J

3. The Everything Sale—happens only once a year, so don’t miss it! There is, quite literally, a little bit of everything for sale at this community-wide thrift sale.

4. The Store Christmas Sale—Ukarumpa’s answer to America’s Black Friday! Lots of fun, special things are ordered from the US and Australia and sold in the specially decorated and very festive backroom of the Store.

Kainantu--where we go second-handing
5. Second-handing—okay, so this doesn’t actually happen in Ukarumpa, but I was running out of ideas, and we get pretty excited about going to Kainantu, Goroka, or Lae and hitting up the second-hand clothing stores there. You can always find something interesting…even a pair of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle onesie pajamas!

6. Movie nights—with friends and plenty of snacks, of course!

7. Bible study—there are several (lots? I don’t actually know how many) Bible study groups that meet during the week. Each group chooses what they want to study; my group just finished watching Matt Chandler’s Recovering Redemption series on DVD; it was excellent—I highly recommend it! We also like to have potlucks (are you sensing that we really like to eat?!), especially to celebrate finishing a study, or to welcome new members, or because it’s the beginning of the month. J

8. Game nights—also with friends and even more yummy snacks! J

9. Having people over for a meal—continuing with the food theme, because eating alone all the time is sad! (Well, for me, sometimes…)

10. Snuggling up on a cold night with a blanket, a cup of tea, and a good book!

  1. They all sound like fun. I think the eating part is world-wide❤

  2. What is a social event without food?

Love that formerly-asphalt road in the picture! Better than speed bumps for keeping you within the limit

    1. Haha, it is no social event at all! Here in Ukarumpa we have what we like to call speed mountains...one low-riding car actually got stuck on one!
