Mail

There's nothing quite like going to the post office and seeing real mail--a postcard, letter, or even a package--waiting to be picked up! I get lots of questions about sending letters or packages, so I thought I'd write up a few helpful hints. 🙂

A regular letter or card can be mailed right from the comfort of your own mailbox with an international stamp, which costs about $1.15 right now.

The "Golden Ticket" we get in our mailboxes when we have
a package waiting!
If you really want to get crazy and send me a package (I will love you forever!), one of the key things is that everything is packaged well. What that means is that anything that could possibly melt, spill, or otherwise make a mess, is put into a sealed Ziploc-type bag. This is also very handy for me, because Ziplocs are like gold in Papua New Guinea! It's also really important that you don't leave any empty space in the box. That's when it gets squished and stuff may get broken. 😢 So if you find that there is extra space, you can pack it with wadded up newspapers or plastic bags. You may want to check with the post office to see what kind of box you want to use. Up to a certain weight, it's cheaper to use a regular box, but if it's over that weight (I think it's about six pounds, but don't quote me on that!) a flat-rate box will probably be better.

Some ideas:
  • Spices (you may want to check with me to see which ones I currently need, but Italian seasoning is usually a safe bet)
  • Dry erase markers (especially Expo brand)
  • Candy (peanut butter M&Ms, Andes mints, Twix, or anything without nuts)
  • Chocolate chips or other yummy baking chips
  • Seasoning packets (like for meat or veggies)
  • Nail polish
  • Pictures of you and your family
  • Fruity tea (hot or cold)
  • Crystal Light-type drink mixes
  • Pens/pencils
  • Pretty much anything else! Seriously, if you send it, I will find a way to use it!
Feel free to send me an email if you need some more inspiration or are wondering if I need something specific.
