-the party breaks up at 9:30 and everyone is yawning and
half-asleep because it’s past “missionary midnight” (aka 9 pm).
-you find yourself searching for recipes that you can use
pukpuk (crocodile) in.
-you get excited when you find a new recipe for pukpuk.
-you pick bugs out of the rice, flour, and various other dry
ingredients without batting an eye.
-you aren’t really bothered by the thought that you very
likely missed quite a few bugs in said dry ingredients.
-you grumble because the milk powder is old and won’t mix
in, so you always have lumpy milk.
-getting your laundry dry makes you inordinately happy.
(This was after hanging my laundry out at least twice, maybe three times.)
-you end up playing Hand and Foot (a very popular game here
in Ukarumpa) by candlelight because the power was out for most of the evening.
-you wash dishes by the light of your headlamp for the same
reason.
-you start off your Bible study with the latest update on
the boils on your legs.
-the boil stories are closely followed by the latest dead
rat count in various Bible study members’ houses.
-you see a spider the size of a dinner plate hanging out in
the doorway of the restaurant you’re planning to eat at…and you still go in,
eat, and fully enjoy your meal, although you do keep one eye trained on the
doorway.
And on those happy notes…you’ll be joining me over here real
soon, right?!
