Calling All Teachers!

Remember when you were a kid and school was called off for a day, or maybe even two? Why was school called off—snow, ice, -30F temperatures? Now imagine that you are a missionary on the field with school-aged children; there is a school on your mission center, but it isn’t fully staffed, and can’t offer classes until they find qualified teachers. This scenario is exactly where Ukarumpa International School (UIS) Primary Campus found itself last week.

As sometimes happens on the mission field, one of our teachers had to go home suddenly last week, just before school was supposed to start on Wednesday. Our school administrators and branch directors met and decided to postpone starting Term 3 until Monday, 19 January, in order to find a workable solution to the problem. They were able to juggle schedules and switch a few things around, and we will be starting school on Monday—it will be a shorter day than usual and we will not be offering all the special classes that we usually do, but we will have school!

You might be wondering, “What can I do?” There are a couple ways you can help:
  1. Pray! Pray for the teachers and administrators that we have, that they will continue on in the work they have been called to. Pray that God will lay our mission—supporting the work of Bible translation through children’s education in PNG—on people’s hearts, and that they would be obedient, either in coming or sending.
  2. Spread the word! If you have a teacher friend who is interested in missions, or is looking for a change, let them know of the need here!
  3. Go! Maybe you are that teacher who is being called to go, but isn’t sure how to get started—check out the video below and send our HR department an email. Click here to go to our website and learn more about UIS.
The official press release:
Ukarumpa International School is in urgent need of teachers for the upcoming school year and beyond. Opportunities are available in most subjects and age levels from preschool up to the end of high school, with teachers for grades 3-6 being the highest priority need from June 2015; administrative/leadership positions are also available. Visit www.uispng.org, see our video below, or email hr-UISrecruiter@sil.org.pg for more information on supporting the work of Bible translation in Papua New Guinea by teaching Missionary Kids.
